EO Partners with the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment
We are pleased to announce today that we have established a partnership with the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment at the University of Colorado Law School in Boulder. The partnership will help us expand our work in the U.S. and enhance our programs with the renowned scholarship and advocacy of the Center and the Law School.
The University of Colorado Law School in particular, has a long and distinguished history of academic leadership on place-based environmental conservation and Native American land and resource rights. The Getches-Wilkinson Center’s eponymous Chair of the Board is Professor Charles Wilkinson, a legendary scholar on Indian treaty law and leading authority on natural resources law. Professor Wilkinson was involved in several seminal cases of tribal rights over the last 40 years and has written extensively about the histories and struggles of modern Indian Nations.
The Law School is currently under the leadership of Professor James Anaya, former UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights Indigenous Peoples and former EO board member. The Getches-Wilkinson Center is run by Alice Madden, who previously served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental & External Affairs at the U.S. Department of Energy and was climate advisor and deputy chief of staff under Colorado Governor Bill Ritter from 2009 to 2011.
The Center is also the secretariat of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force, a subnational collaboration between 35 states and provinces from around the world, led by Professor William Boyd, that seeks to promote low emissions rural development and reduced emissions from deforestation and land use (REDD+).
Needless to say, we are thrilled to be partnering with the Center and look forward to working together to enable the sustainable development of energy and natural resources.
