Equitable Origin Shapes the Conversation of the Methane Mitigation Canada Summit

As methane regulations become progressively tighter and new greenwashing legislation reshapes Canadian energy company disclosures, Equitable Origin’s Director of Energy, Jennifer Turner co-chaired the Methane Mitigation Canada Summit hosted by International Quality & Productivity Center (IQPC) in Calgary on October 1-2nd.

The Summit helped bring our insights from the frontline of certification and ESG to this dialogue on leading practices and partnerships in methane measurement and mitigation in energy operations across North America. To cap off the event EO CEO Jason Switzer joined Jennifer in hosting a Masterclass featuring guest speakers Leor Rotchild, sustainability consultant and author, and Donna Phillips, EVP of Corporate Development at Pacific Canbriam Energy. The session offered a deep dive into the trends in corporate ESG and showcased the transformative potential of certification in the energy sector.

Certification and Accountability

Equitable Origin championed certification as a mechanism for greater accountability and performance assurance throughout the Summit. Participants had the opportunity to go deeper on this during the Masterclass, where Donna Phillips of Pacific Canbriam Energy stressed the importance of EO’s independent audit in adding credibility to performance claims.                .

“Certification is a very different thing because you have that independent assessment… We have to audit our financial statements. We have to audit our reserves. We audit numerous things in the health and safety space. So why would we not want to audit the sustainability initiatives? It just makes sense.”

Indigenous Partnerships and Social Equity

The Methane Mitigation Canada Summit raised the importance of Indigenous reconciliation in energy projects. EO sought to showcase how social equity can be integrated into methane mitigation and broader decarbonization strategies.

Regulation and Compliance

The Summit highlighted the challenges and opportunities that come with tightening methane regulations. The impact on organizations expanded to explore how certification can alleviate regulation impacts and enable operational strategies and processes. Equitable Origin’s emphasis on sustainability certification complements this theme by providing a structured, transparent approach to enhancing corporate responsibility by synthesizing global benchmarks for good practice that go beyond compliance.

Technological Innovation

Technology played a central role throughout the summit. From sessions on advanced monitoring tools and artificial intelligence to discussions on emissions management solutions, it’s clear that technological advances will be essential in achieving meaningful methane reduction. This aligns with Equitable Origin’s push for continual improvement.

Collaboration Across Sectors

Cross-sector collaboration also came through as a key need.  Participating policymakers, technology providers, and sustainability experts discussed the need to resolve the gap between technical achievability, industry efforts and regulatory expectations, across diverse legal jurisdictions. Equitable Origin’s global applicability and credibility across stakeholders was suggested as part of the solution set, to help level the playing field for performance with Producers outside North America.

Looking Ahead

The Methane Mitigation Canada Summit 2024 offered a powerful platform for collaboration and insight-sharing. The EO team was grateful to help host the event and looks forward to our continued collaboration with IQPC beyond this event.
